Beginner's Guide To Reading Fantasy

Fantasy, as a genre, is widely sought-after in the book world and has been gaining immense popularity through social media platforms like booktok and booktube. Here are some of my favorite fantasy book recommendations for those of you who are brand new or want to explore the genre!

Throne of Glass

You can't go wrong with Sarah J. Maas, but this eight-book series is my personal favorite. Our main character, Celaena Sardothian, is a skilled assassin. Everyone knows her name, but no one knows her face. We follow her as she is invited to the castle, by Adarlan's cruel dictator, to compete to become the King's Champion and earn her freedom. Although, this series is so much more than that. You won't want to read anything else and nothing will feel quite the same once you've finished.

Divine Rivals

This one is for my romantasy people! This is probably the best romance I've ever read in a fantasy book, and that's saying something. Rebecca Ross tells a story of a war between gods and two rival journalists who happen to possess magic typewriters. Iris and Roman discover they can communicate by passing letters under their closet doors. However, they have no idea who they're writing to. Things start to pick up after Iris is sent to the front lines as a correspondent. This book, in itself, was phenomenal. Unfortunately, the sequel did fall a little short for me.

Legendborn

A YA fantasy set at UNC with a secret demon-hunting society? Yes, please! In this magical ongoing series, we follow 16-year-old Bree as she discovers more about her past and school than ever imagined. Bree is one of my favorite main characters and one of the best female fantasy leads I've encountered. This is a supernatural modern twist on King Arthur and The Round Table. I could not put this down and the sequel is even better! I cannot wait for the third book next year!

The Bear and the Nightingale

This beautifully written trilogy by Kathrine Arden is perfect for winter. Ideal for those looking for a historical fantasy read, this series is set in medieval Russia. Vasilisa Petrovna can communicate with creatures from Russian folklore. This comes at a time when Orthodox Christianity is attempting to rid the country of any belief in said creatures. What will happen to Vasilisa when the church becomes convinced that she is a witch among them? Admittedly, a tad slower than other books on this list, but amazingly well-written.

The Invisible Life of Addie Larue

I had to include one of my personal all-time favorites. Addie is a 23-year-old French woman who, in 1714, makes a deal that results in her being cursed. She is burdened with immortality and the curse that everyone she meets will immediately forget her. That is, until 2014 when a worker at a bookstore does remember her from a previous encounter. I could write an essay on this book, it's one of the few on my shelf I would even consider to be perfect in every way. The plot is perfect, the romance is perfect, and the writing is perfect. Please read this book!

If you guys give any of these a try, let me know what you think!
